Summer flowers ... Fuchsia magellanica "Ricartonii"       28.07.2010
This hardy fuchsia is one of my biggest joys this year. The past winter was incredibly long and harsh but still, this fuchsia proved to be a hardy miracle. It has not just survived but thrives and is doing extremely well, making a dense bush with profusion of vivid fuchsia red and purple flowers. I am overwhelmed by its vitality and health.

Summer flowers ... Chitalpa tashkentensis "Pink Dawn"       21.07.2010
Some pictures are just awsome. Being the photographer it might sound a bit like boasting but I mean that the plant in the picture, the background, the detail, simply everything works much better than I would have ever composed (thanks for that!), all I did was push the button.
This chitalpa is called Pink dawn, isn´t it a lovely name that really suits this lovely plant? Luckily, recent rainstorms came just before blooming, the plant was still in bud so the rain could not damage the flowers which we are about to enjoy for 2-3 coming weeks.
Summer flowers ... x Chitalpa tashkentensis "Summer Bells"®       20.07.2010
Summer Bells® is another variety which should be blooming again at the end of summer if the weather is still hot and sunny.
Today it is going to be handsome foliage! ... Gleditsia triacanthos "Rubylace"       20.07.2010
Have you ever polished copper? This is what it looks like in the end - leaves of this honey locust do look like polished copper in the setting sun while young, freshly emerging leaves are rich burgundy red.

Early July is the right time for Indian bean tree flowers. They are white with red veins and yellow throat, composed in large, erect panicles. This year the beginning of summer has been extremely hot and our tree is flowering like never before. So visitors when they first encounter it perform a little stagger backwards position :-)

Lilies are beautiful perennials with showy flowers. I must admit I took quite some time to get to like them. But now I am truly in love with them. There are so many varieties among them, each of which offers different flower shapes, colours and perfumes, and if you wisely combine them as far as blooming time you can have your garden completely lilied up from June until August :-)

Just blooming ... Abelia engleriana       04.07.2010
There are plants and flowers I love photographing more than others. I suppose it´s natural. Every plant has something worth looking at but there are some that just attract me more. Often these plants are not the boldest, the biggest, the rarest. But still, they have a thing I love about them. Exactly like this abelia. It is such a humble plant that starts flowering in early summer and continues until early autumn. The flowers are numerous, small but tender, their colours are not extraordinary but very elegant, the habit is not particularly neat but vital and healthy looking. The blooms are wide enough for a bee as well as a humble-bee giving plenty of nectar to all.

Just blooming ... Cornus kousa "Milky Way"       28.06.2010
This Japanese dogwood, like many others, has been flowering for more than a month now. That´s because the white petals are in fact bracts i.e. coloured leaves which do not fade so quickly. The shrub in full bloom looks like covered with a million white butterflies.
Giant leaves ... Liriodendron chinense       28.06.2010

Thunderstorm       13.06.2010
We have enjoyed the very first truly hot week this year. While in May we made a few a low temperature records, in early June we must have made another one, this time on the high side with 33°C. Logically, every heat wave is followed by a good thunderstorm, just like last night. When I was about 10 years younger I was fascinated by the unique pictures the sky can create after a storm or before it or actually anytime. The following photos were made within 45 minutes. Such a change between the images in so short time, isn´t it?

Garden after the storm       13.06.2010
After a late afternoon thunderstorm the sky is covered with grey-white clouds covering the setting sun. This creates a gorgeous effect making the whole sky orange and consequently the country is flooded with this golden-orange colour. Then you feel like on another planet with a different colour spectrum. I love that time although it seldom takes longer than about half an hour.

Well, our lawn is one solid (or rather flooded) rice field and water in the swimming pool will soon flow over its edges. Well, that is a day in raining hell. But I don´t feel like moaning, why don´t we make the best of it. Do you remember a song from the 80´s called It´s Raining Men? Fantastic tune and a big smash for a duo called The Weather Girls. What do you think about the video concept today, after almost 30 years? A bunch of half-naked sexy boys in their tight swimming trunks surrounding two chocolate godesses. Remember to close your mouth when wondering how come this was ever supposed to be hot :-)

Most medium late magnolias have two phases of blooming. The first one comes in late April when the shrub is flooded with flowers an no leaves. The second one follows 2-4 weeks later, the plant is in leaf already and the flowers appear again in good quantity and if the weather is not too hot (which is something out of the question this year) they remain unharmed by the sun and beautiful. Just like the flowers of this Susan magnolia.

It is appalling. In the middle of May we see mist coming out of our mouths when we speak, snow in the mountains, somewhere 45 cm, and major floods due to heavy rains in Northern Moravia. When will it stop? When will it turn to better? Everyobody has been looking forward to nicer and warmer wether after this year´s long winter but it still does not seem coming. Blue Angel       14.05.2010
The architect who planned these trees had a clear vision years ago. His vision comes alive every year in May when these trees are covered with violet-blue flowers and followed by extra large leaves in summer. Brilliant idea. It is a pity I have no way of photographing the trees from an upper level from where you could see the square completely flooded by violet colour. I may blackmail a doorman of the tallest building to allow me on the roof if I find enough courage ... :-)
Just blooming ... Rhododendron makinoi "Rosa Perle"       14.05.2010
Among rhododendrons you can find species and varieties that look very unusual and not many gardeners grow or even know them. I am very fond of makinoi rhododendrons. They have narrow, dark green, sometimes undulated leaves and look a bit like oleander shrubs. Moreover, Rosa Perle is a variety that offers bright pink flowers that can be seen from a distance.

Royal Beauty is the top favourite crab apple. It has purple-red flowers, burdundy red leaves, and weeping habit which makes it a beautiful specimen plant in any garden.
Just blooming ... Paulownia tomentosa       07.05.2010
"Just blooming" may be a bit exaggerated at this moment. "Waking up" would be more appropriate. I just couldn´t not pass the moment of the very first flower opening by.
Rhododendrons       04.05.2010
Quite often I hear people moan about rhododendrons, especially here in the Czech and Slovak Republic. They are unhappy about their state because you get to see quite a number of odd-looking plants that are in bad soil and/or unsuitable position. Plants are losing leaves or are attacked by pests and diseases. Such plants obviously give the impression that rhododendrons are not worth planting in nice gardens. To be honest, yet some 5 years ago I was the same - reluctant to grow and sell them. But then I got some really quality plants from England and Germany, planted them exactly as per the instructions given directly by the grower and they are fantastic. Just look at this border, even in today´s rainy weather the plants look seriously perfect, offering a healthy, green background that will soon burst with many colourful flowers.
Just blooming ... Rhododendron "President Roosevelt"       04.05.2010
And for those of you who want to have something extra we are offering a UNIQUE variety that not only has variegated foliage (we know a few other varieties with variegated foliage) but also bi-coloured flowers that are white in the middle and glowing pink at margins, which is a combination that no other rhody with coloured leaves has offered so far. Simply gorgeous.

Just blooming ... Magnolia "Yellow River"       04.05.2010
April is a magnolia month. And since we are magnolia specialists we also offer other varieties that bloom later and bring splash of colours even in May and June. Yellow River is a denudata type that makes large, light yellow flowers in end April and when they have gone the shrub opens another portion of flowers from buds that are nearer the stem.
